The Pacific adalah miniseri televisi sebanyak 10 episode yang berlatar belakang Perang Dunia II. Miniseri ini tayang perdana di AS pada tanggal 14 Maret 2010, dan di Asia tanggal 3 April 2010. Serupa dengan miniseri Band of Brothers [2001], The Pacific berfokus pada aksi Korps Marinir AS dalam perang Pasifik.
The Pacific dipelopori oleh Bruce McKenna (co-executive producer), salah satu penulis utama di Band of Brothers. Hugh Ambrose, putra penulis Band of Brothers, Stephen Ambrose, menjabat sebagai project consultant.
The Pacific diproduseri oleh Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, dan Gary Goetzman bekerjasama dengan HBO Films, Playtone, DreamWorks. Film ini berlokasi di Australia dan mulai syuting pada tanggal 10 Agustus 2007 dan selesai pada Mei 2008.
Untuk menggarap miniseri ‘The Pacific’, Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman dan Steven Spielberg membutuhkan dana US$ 200 juta atau sekitar Rp 1,8 triliun. Apa yang membuat miniseri itu menghabiskan dana sebesar itu?
Dari segi tenaga kerja, ‘The Pacific’ melibatkan lebih dari 800 pekerja yang berasal dari Australia, Inggris, Amerika Serikat, Kanada, Selandia Baru, Irlandia dan Jepang. Lebih dari 26 ribu jam, mereka bekerja selama proses syuting. Itu belum termasuk proses pra-produksi dan pasca-produksi.
‘The Pacific’ menampilkan 138 aktor dengan dialog. Enam sutradara pun digandeng Tom Hanks Cs untuk mengadaptasi buku karya Eugene B Sledge, ‘With the Old Brees’, dan Robert Leckie, ‘Helmet for My Pillow’. Di antaranya, Carl Franklin, David Nutter, Jeremy Podeswa dan Tony To.
Miniseri yang dibagi menjadi 10 episode itu menampilkan setting yang semirip aslinya. Oleh karena itu, mereka perlu membangun lebih dari 90 set di lokasi syuting di Australia.
Untuk membangun setting Iwo Jima di Hillview Quarry, tim produksi harus menggali 62 ribu ton tanah. Tidak berhenti di situ, sebuah perusahaan lokal pun disewa untuk menambang dan menghaluskan 4 ribu ton Scoria, batu apung berwarna hitam. Mereka memilih menggunakan scoria karena pasir di Iwo Jiwa berwarna hitam, sementara tanah Hillview Quarry cenderung cokelat.
Kostum yang digunakan oleh aktor dan aktris ‘The Pacific’ juga tidak kalah detilnya. Untuk membuat tiga ribu kostum angkatan laut Amerika Serikat, mereka memerlukan 20 ribu meter persegi kain kepar yang ditenun dengan mesin tenun kuno di India. Nah, jadi Anda bisa memperkirakan sendiri, dana sebesar US$ 200 juta itu dihabiskan untuk apa.
Film yang berbiaya produksi US$200 juta ini dibuat berdasarkan pada kisah nyata dari armada laut (marinir) di medan perang Pasifik pada era Perang Dunia II. Film ini diperankan oleh James Badge Dale, Joe Mazzello dan Jon Seda, masing-masing berakting sebagai-Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, serta John Basilone, tiga marinir AS di medan pertempuran Pasifik selama Perang Dunia II. Bersama rekan-rekan marinir lainnya, mereka menjalani pertempuran pertama dengan tentara Jepang di kawasan hutan Guadalcanal yang mengerikan, melewati hutan hujan yang tak tertembus Cape Gloucester, menyeberangi benteng karang terkutuk Peleliu, sampai teras pasir berdarah Iwo Jima, melalui ladang-ladang pembantaian Okinawa, hingga mencapai kemenangan, untuk kembali setelah Hari Kemenangan Atas Jepang.
